Captain Mack Greene

Captain Mack Greene will provide passengers aboard the Mister Matthew, the best possible voyage for observation of Atlantic Whales, Seabirds and other marine life. Passengers are safe in the knowledge that they are being Captain’d and cared for by one of the industry’s leading experts.

Captain Mackie was raised on Campobello Island and by age 13 owned his first craft. Upon graduation from Campobello Island Consolidated School, Mack went on to complete the first of many marine vessel certifications. He continued his education at Holland College Marine Center, as well as Caraquet School of Fisheries.  Mac is a Transport Canada approved Marine Navigation Instructor at the NBCC in St. Andrews N.B.

Whales have always been a part of island life on Campobello. Mac opened Campobello Island’s first official whale watch “Island Cruises” in 1995. As business grew so did his appreciation for the awe-inspiring creatures.

In 2003 Captain Greene was asked to head the newly formed, Campobello Whale Rescue Team. Ten years later, this acclaimed group (comprised entirely of local fisherman) continues with Captain Mac at the group’s helm. The Campobello Whale Rescue Team is the area’s first response to any and all whale rescue efforts in and around the Bay of Fundy.

In 2004, he joined the New England Aquarium (Boston MA) as the Marine Operations Manager for Right Whale Research. Concurrently he served as the Canadian Large Whale Disentanglement Coordinator at the Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown, MA 2005-2007)

When Captain Greene completed the Level 5 Whale Disentanglement certification in 2002 he joined an elite group of a handful of others on the eastern seaboard who have done so.

What began as the basic desire to make a living and carve out a life for his family in the small fishing community has evolved into a profound responsibility. Captain Mac is a committed Whale Watch professional with the mission to protect the marine life in the Bay of Fundy. The Captain believes that only with Eco-tourism, Education, and Responsible Whale Watching will we be able to protect these magnificent creatures for future generations.

Spend an unforgettable day with Island Cruises and Captain Mac Greene. You will enjoy a whale watch experience that is safe, educational and will inspire an appreciation for the Atlantic Whale, Seabirds, Seals and the environment.
